We are building a KE17 Sprinter coupe for a customer to compete in CAMS Group Nc historic racing. The car started life as a complete and relatively good condition car. Thankfully, it is reasonably straight and with negligible rust, though the mechanics are all "tired". | View the embedded image gallery online at: http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=156:ke17-sprinter-race-car&catid=45:general&Itemid=43#sigProGalleria33f72fe9ad |
The CAMS regulations require the car to emulate the level of modifications allowed in the 1970's, with a few exemptions for current safety rules. The general Nc regs are found at .. http://www.camsmanual.com.au/08_historic.asp
The factory interior upholstery was largely removed by the owner before delivery to us. Our first job was fitting a race seat , lighweight battery and constructing a comprehensive roll cage. Because the owners are a father/son team, we had to specially make very shallow & adjsutable seat runners that gave both helmet clearance and allow fore-aft movement so both can comfortably reach the pedals. A 5-point race harness has just been custom made for us and fitted.
At this stage, we have just tidied up the original 3K twin carb engine & gearbox until a full race engine is built in 2014.
The brakes have been changed to dual master cylinders with an adjustable bias pedal bar. This will allow the driver to adjust the front/rear balance for various tracks & conditions. We have fitted wider (vented) front discs and 2 piston calipers in accordance with the rules. Rear brakes are left standard except for special linings.
The KE10-17 models share a unique front suspension that includes a transverse leaf spring, wide lower wishbone and unusual design of front struts. Coil-overs with adjsutable dampers and camber strut tops have been custom built by us and we made some bushes to replace the worn out ones in the wishbone. The transverse leaf is deleted but a purpose built sway bar will be fitted. The rear leaf suspension has been re-worked based on sucessful systems used in the 1970's Escorts.
The rules limit us to 13 x 6" period wheels so we have located and restored some 1970's Minilite wheels. As we are not permitted to flare the guards, these have proven too wide for the front so we will end up with 5 1/2" wheels on the front. We changed the stud pattern on the hubs and rear axles to 4 x 114PCD to allow more commonly available pattern wheels to be fitted. Semi-slick tyres will be fitted once the car is track ready.
Extensive re-wiring has been completed with a control panel down beside the seat for easy access once strapped in with a harness.
More to come as we continue with the build.....................
