Toyota Corolla KE Range

The KE10-KE70 rear drive Corollas are the new cult car for young restorers at the budget end of the market.  Thousands have survived and some with only one or two owners, still appear.  Like the old Celicas, we can still easily repair these cars, with many being given updated engines like 2TG & 3TG, 4AG and even 3SG.

Because so many were made, many commonly needed mechanical parts are still readily available, but quality new body & trim parts are increasingly rare.  Recent jobs include making up-rated shocks including coil-overs, gearbox & engine repairs, custom sway bars especially for early cars and brake upgrades

These are a popular 1st race car, especially for juniors. We are currently helping to prepare a KE17 coupe for Group Nc Racing.

NEW LAMINATED WINDSCREENS CURRENTLY BEING MADE FOR KE15 & 17 MODELS.

Toyota Celica - Rear Drive Range TA RA SA

The first 3 generations of rear-drive celicas ending with the RA60/SA63 are now rarely seen as everyday cars but are fast becoming collectible classics.  This is especially true of the early TA series cars.  We can still efficiently repair these cars, with many being given updated engines, later gearboxes, etc by us.  In a few cases, cars are being fitted with period update engines like 2TG, 3TG, 18RG, etc.

Because so many were made, many mechanical parts are still readily available, but new body & trim parts are increasingly rare.  Our body specialists can assist restorers with rust repairs, but some cars are so bad, it's terminal.  A professional assessment early in the project is often useful.

A number of original race cars have survived and we often compete against them at special historic race meetings.

Toyota Corolla Trueno & Levin AE range

The front wheel drive corolla range has to be the most popular car ever made.  We see lots of these ranging from totally standard everyday cars, top spec imports and right through to wild racers.  We carry a wide range of commonly needed parts and have all the special tools to work efficiently on these cars.  The most common "problems" with them are premature front wheel bearing failures, and overheating caused by failed radiators, stuck thermostats, etc.  Unfortunately, because the engines have alloy heads, they are not very tolerant of chronic overheating.  The very last of them, from mid 1990's to 2000, can be superb everyday cars. Imported models like the AE101 & AE111 have many unique features, with the 20 valve engine and 6 speed gearbox ranking highly.  All versions with very high km's commonly get noisy gearboxes and a lot of movement in the steering rack. Any of them with more than 200,000km or over 15 years, is ready for a major cooling system service, usually including all new hoses, and all new wheel bearings.

The AE111 Levin & Trueno often have 'super strut' front suspension. This system wears quickly to the point where clonks and groans are intolerable. The cost to repair it with all new parts is absurd and the only sensible solution is to swap it for a conventional Macpherson strut front end out of a AE112 etc

We offer very comprehensive pre-purchase inspections.

BMW M Series

We are pleased to assist owners of classic to modern BMW's with a wide variety of repairs and servicing, ranging from special engine builds down to routine log book services.  Of the pre-90 cars , genuine  M cars are fast becoming collector pieces , and although still wonderful everyday cars, they do need sympathetic servicing of their complex ,high performance engines and related systems. Specialist models like M-series , Schnitzer, Alpina etc were occasionally privately imported and some of these can be  prone to rust depending where they spent their early years.

Thankfully, a wide variety of genuine and quality aftermarket parts are readily available, with everyday service items stocked by us for the more popular models.

Both standard and special engines, designed for non-standard turbochargers , have been built by us.

We have worked on most of the different brands of clubman cars commonly seen in Australia, mostly helping owner-constructors.

Nissan Sylvia 180SX 200SX

The Nissan Sylvia range is hugely popular with import car enthusiasts due to its combination of modest price and high performance rear drive engineering.  They are ideally suited to motor sport as they are easily modified.  Most are fitted with some version of the SR20 4 cylinder, 2 litre engine.  Based on cars we have seen, there are a number of items to be looked for when buying or modifying these cars:

• Japanese short-stroke coil over suspension units, commonly leak after a relatively short life
• The life of front brake pads and rotors are relatively short, and many imports have had brake upgrades using Skyline parts
• Engine camshaft & lifter rattles with SR20. A sign of poor maintenance
• Loose or leaking rear steering systems (HICAS)
• Exhaust leaks at engine or turbo from blown gaskets, broken studs etc
• Engine electrical failures, mostly coil-on-plug units and throttle sensors
• Rattles in 5 speed gearbox gears and major failures of the 6 speed version

Nissan Skyline and Stagea

Many variants of the 2WD and 4WD imported Skyline range are serviced by Road & Track. We have been involved in all sorts of mechanical repairs and several crash damaged cars. Engine repairs are becoming common-place, some for performance improvement reasons, and others due to major calamities.

Like many high perforamnce imports, seemingly "simple" engine modifications can have disasterous consequences. Pistons damaged from detonation are becoming quite common, mostly caused by boost increases without other changes.

Toyota Celica ZZ231 7th generation

The final generation of the celica range is a popular modern sports car, endowed with great handing and a powerful modern engine. Very few major changes were made over its 6 year life span. Numerous factory body kits and wheel allowed owners to customise the car when new. Osborne Motorsport used a team of 2 cars to win their class in the Australian Production car championship for several years, and a few cars are now moving into other race categories Its only major downside is the 6 speed gearbox that suffers from premature syncro wear, causing the changes to be notchy after as little as 50,000km.

Pre-purchase inspections are strongly recommended as most of the cars are getting to the stage of needing substanial repairs.

Toyota MR2 AW11 range

The AW11 MR2 is fast emerging as a classic Japanese sports car. Light, well-built, with sharp handling and powerful 4-cylinder engine, it is seen as the ideal club car for budget-conscious owners. Thankfully, the parts supply is still excellent, with many mechanical parts shared among various other Toyotas, especially the Corolla range.

Common modifications include engine upgrades, especially the 20valve 4AG, 6 speed transmission from later Corolla and brake upgrade using ST185 parts. LIke the later SW20 range, we have undertaken most jobs, including major chassis/panel repairs using our in-house tradespersons.

We stock a wide range of genuine Toyota and replacement parts, and are constantly repairing and servicing these cars in our shop. Click on the picture to open a gallery of relevant pictures

Toyota Celica ST162 & Toyota GT4 ST165

Despite being late 80's era, these cars represent excellent technology and value when in good order. In most cases they can be easily upgraded with later model power units as some of the cars shown here have been. Whislt the mechanicals are very robust, there are a number of very common fault to watch out for....

  • Poor syncro action in the gearbox, especially 2-3 change
  • Engine & transmission mounts split or sagged
  • Oil leaks, especially from camshaft region
  • Worn out shockies and bulging front strut tops
  • Leaking radiators & waterpumps
  • Sagged/split suspension rubbers

All commonly needed parts are stocked, and even unique parts for the rare GT4 models are regularly supplied ex Japan.

Toyota Sprinter Levin Trueno AE86

The rear wheel drive AE86 range is nothing short of a cult car, with hundreds of them being rebuilt and restored. Our own original GroupA race Sprinter always attracts a crowd when it is bought out of the workshop.

Only sold with the 4AC SOHC engine in Australia, the 4AG twin cam engine is therfore a popular conversion. A small number of Japanese spec Levins and Truenos have been imported, and these all have the 4AG as standard.

Common projects on these cars include

  • Wiring re-work associated with engine transplants
  • All sorts of engine, gearbox & diff internal repairs
  • Custom tailshafts made
  • Diff conversions, ratios changed and LSD's added
  • Coil-overs made and/or fitted
  • Big brake kits made and/or fitted (race use only)

We stock a wide selection of NEW mechanical & electrical parts for these cars, with special orders ex Japan arriving regularly, at prices less than retail from a Toyota dealer.

Toyota GT4 ST185 & Celica ST184 ST183

The Celica ST185 GT4 was one of the first of the Japanese turbo 4WD cars that are now commonplace.  Despite their complex mechanics and electrics, they can be quite reliable when sensibly serviced, even if modified. When buying or owning one of these, be aware of issues like these...

  • short life of wheels bearings & clutch
  • engine cam cover & seal oil leaks
  • power steering pump oil leaks
  • very poor gearbox syncro action, especially after 100,000km
  • broken engine & diff mounts
  • collapsed front strut upper mounts
  • failed turbochargers, especially on modified cars

We have now undertaken a number of 5SGTE engine upgrades. One of our customers is a regular competitor in dirt sprints, where the 4WD system and carefully built engine, result in excellent performance.

The "plain" ST184 2wd celica was sold locally by the thousands, and is fast becoming a cheap 2nd car, or a 1st car for P plate drivers. Whilst they lack the performance of the hard-core 4WD 185 models, they remain a reliable and effective vehicle for everyday use. Most of the issues noted above also apply to these models.

pre-purchase inspections are strongly suggested for all these cars.
